Arthur Evelyn St. John Waugh, born 28 October 1903, was an English writer of novels, biographies, travel books and he was also a prolific journalist and book reviewer. He is the writer of one of my favourite book to series, Brideshead Revisited.
There has been so much written about Evelyn Waugh that I feel as though there is little I can add, so I will share some interviews, photos and books.
First, from the BBC archives, a 1960 interview from the Face To Face Series which was Evelyn's first television debut. It didn't go as well as the interviewer had hoped.
"We cherish our friends not for their ability to amuse us, but for ours to amuse them..."
- Evelyn Waugh
I thought it would be sensible to hear from a friend rather than a foe or critic. Here is Sir Harold Acton on Evelyn Waugh, 1987.
"...To known and love one other human being is the root of all wisdom."
- Evelyn Waugh, Brideshead Revisited
Here is an extract from the first chapter of Brideshead Revisited read by Jeremy Irons.
